Disclaimer

I remember reading Gandhi's "to the reader" section in his Hind Swaraj and thinking to myself how nice it would be if I could include this in any paper I write for class:

"In my search after Truth I have discarded many ideas and learnt many new things...., therefore, when anybody finds any inconsistency between any two writings of mine, if he has still faith in my sanity, he would do well to choose the later of the two on the same subject."

If I'm inconsistent, then just check the latest thing I wrote. And if it doesn't match the previous things I wrote, then don't worry: you are witnessing the evolution of my thought process. Gandhi was never so worried about being consistent, something that bothered (and continues to annoy) many readers of Gandhi. But you must admit: that's an amusing way to open up his tract on liberation.

  1. I didn't know about this, but it's awesome. Who was it that said "the more you learn the less you know"? Maybe it was just my own father, but it goes well with Gandhi's disclaimer.

  2. Hm, I haven't heard that one before, but I like it! I've kind of heard it in a different way: "The more I know, the more I know that I know nothing." Was that one from your father? =P
